Organizations Faircom New York works with in the environmental sphere include The Cousteau Society.
Inspired by the pioneering marine exploration and conservation work of Jacques Cousteau, the Cousteau Society spans the United States and France. It organizes scientific expeditions to remote regions of the globe through the ship Alcyone.
One focus is on the integrated development of coastal regions worldwide, in a way that respects biodiversity and the needs of diverse ecosystems. Current projects include an effort to protect rays and sharks in the Red Sea, and to restore Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, through the planting of 1.4 million trees.
Famous for its giant statues of human heads, Easter Island witnessed intensive ecological damage early in its history that led to all its trees being cleared. With its population having dwindled from 10,000 to 110 as a result, current efforts are targeted at creating forests that will hold in place the island’s red soil and return it to its previous state of fertility. This project also aims to prevent siltation of the surrounding waters by soil runoff, which impacts the coral and coastal fish.
